Show Preparations

March Show Crowd at Ring II

Have you ever stopped to think about what it takes to get ready for a show, even a small one like our family friendly winter series?  It actually starts many months ahead of time when Tara and crew develop a show schedule.  They have to make sure the dates will work for them and for the many people involved.  If the show will be for VHSA points, they have to register that.  Stephanie has to be sure we have enough ribbons and order them (usually in January or February).  The type and number of divisions and classes is decided and a prize list is assembled, now the job of Kristen, the show secretary as well as office manager.  She will also need to ready judges cards, announcers sheets and a list of everyone showing, their numbers, events, and costs.   We also line up a food vender (thank you JuJu Beads) and sometimes have a tack store or two.  And of course, Tara has to find a judge and usually has a backup judge in mind, just in case.  And she BETTER remember to ask her mother if she is free to do the announcing!

The Wednesday, Thursday or Friday prior to a Saturday Show (the day depends on weather, and what else is going on at the farm) we strip the ring and Everet goes round and round, getting the footing just right.  Then Tara, who has already drawn the course, and Stephanie lay out the course with just poles and measure, step off, measure again and get the striding and feel of the course just right. Next the jumps, usually selected ahead of time, are brought into the ring and set up.  Only then can they be “decorated” with flowers, brush, and seasonal stuff.  Finding all that “stuff” by the way, can be its own adventure!

Bet you thought the show was now ready?  Well, now the course must be ridden to be sure it is correctly set and rides well.  Only now will Tara draw the courses for the judge and those you see on the showboard.  Schooling schedules have to be done and actual schooling may start as soon as the course is ready but mostly takes place on the morning of the show.  In the summer, that is right about dawn!

This is probably enough already and doesn’t even include what has to happen on show day itself!  I hope you enjoyed this little peek behind the show scene.  We do it all to help you enjoy a good show day!
